Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

  • Wheel Bearings @ 60k - 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Have to replace both front wheel bearings & rotors @60k! $700+. Never had to do this on any car Ive owned. Cant find the horn to repair it, weird. Otherwise car is alright for basic transportation. Hopefully no more expensive repairs.

  • Too Many problems - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Great looking but very poor, quality and reliability. This car has been in the shop more times in two years than all my other cars combined. Recirc vent door will not stay closed, head gasket leak at 300 miles, transmission rebuilt at 31,000 miles. Now the CV joint is slinging axle grease. I bought this car new because of the reviews Ive read hear, big mistake. People are too enamored with the styling and ignoring Chryslers poor quality control. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more for a car with a better track record.

  • This car stinks - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I downsized from my F-150 hoping to save on gas mileage, so far, not that great. But the upside is that as currently it stands the radio turns on and off when it feels like it. Only my right front blinker works. My battery dies if you leave the radio on(when it decides to work) for more that 5 minutes. The 12 volt plug in the center console doesnt work. The airbag light comes on just for fun. The automatic door opener in the back works when it feels like it. Im just waiting to see what else on this car falls apart. But I like the interior design. Oh and yeah water does stain the seats. Thank God I live in San Diego where it doesnt rain that much.

  • Dream Cruiser? - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have only had my Dream Cruiser Series 4 for 4 days. But so far, it is a great car and learning more about it each day. All good.

  • Another Chrysler Turb-woe - 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Unfortunately, we purchased this car when it was on Consumer Reports "Best Bets" list. One year later this specific model is on the "Worst". We have had a major engine overhaul and replace numerous sensors. The 17" rims and tires have been another expensive problem. The paint and finish is the worst I have seen in my 35 years of driving. If this is the kind of product the American taxpayer is supposed to save Chrysler for then let them fold!

  • Looks were deceiving.... VERY disappointed - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser

PLEASE reconsider if you are wanting to buy a PT. I bought my 06 used, but only 11 months old & very few miles. I have had a lot of AC problems, heater core, wheels, brakes, and tire problems. AND the back door lock doesnt work (gets stuck locked) until you manually unlock it... a pain when you have kids. It handled well on snow/ice. But that about the only positive thing I can think about it. The biggest complaint I have is the 18-19 mpg! And thats driving 20 miles highway to & from work every day! WHAT A GAS HOG!!!! NOT WHAT THEY SAY IT GETS. And.. I keep up with the maintenance... oil changes, etc. I would definitely reconsider buying a PT Loser!

  • Boring, boring, boring - 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Looks good from the outside, but by 2008 is getting dated. The dashboard is sleek, but made of a very cheap plastic. The seats are not comfortable in the slightest for long drives. They are not contoured to the body at all. Not much storage capacity despite being a wagon. The power is pitiful in town and for the highway.

  • Why Do We Have Two Of These? - 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

W.P. Chrysler Special Edition. Interior room less than 2002 model. Water pump and transmission solenoid block (machined casting) both replaced under warranty by dealership at No Charge. No gas mileage. No performance from 4 cylinder engine. My extended-cab pickup truck turns a tighter radius than these cars. The end cannot come too soon for these cars.

  • Looks Good, But Stinks - 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

My girlfriend purchased this vehicle three years ago. First year was alright. Nothing major happend except for the very poor gas mileage, and there is no performance at all. Second year brakes and suspension went out. Had to replaced the front and rear brakes and the vehicle only had 50,000 miles on it. Also at the same time the struts go out. Third year major problems, transmission will not shift gears. Had to get it towed and no one knows what to fix. Never again.
